Granny has told us the story many times, with such glee in her eyes and love in her heart, as Papa turns his head, shrugs his shoulders, closes his eyes and smiles with a hint of amused embarrassment, as his wife gushes over him.
"Look at him...look at those beautiful blue eyes. Isn't he handsome?"
I asked her to tell us again about the day she made her move on Papa. They had met a couple of times before, and Papa was friends with Granny's brother, Burnice. She told me how one day Burnice, Granny, and their sister Joy, were riding in Burnice's truck, when they spotted Papa on the side of the road, hitchhiking. Granny told her brother to pull over and pick him up. Granny jumped over Joy, as she had been sitting in the middle, and told Joy to scoot over towards Burnice. She hopped out and let Papa in, knowing she would have to sit on his lap if they were to all fit.
Her plan worked like a charm and she "snagged" her self "a good one." She was so right, she had indeed snagged a good one, and so had he. On January 11, 1950, A Davis and a Cook, took vows to honor and love each other, till death do they part...a promise well kept.
